Plot Summary
Catcher in the Rye is written in the first
person point of view. The main character, Holden Cauldfield a drop out from
Pencey Prep., Agerstown, Pennsylvania talks about his weekend journey and about
people he met in school and before going home after being expelled.. He talks
about the hypocrisy, selfishness of the society, and about the superficial life
of New Yorkers in 1940’s. He is fond of his younger sister, Phoebe. Phoebe’s
character depicts the innocence and pureness of being a child which Holden
tries to preserve from the cruel society. Holden struggles for the search of
his identity, tries to please people but ends up frustrating himself.
